POSITION: Part-Time Paralegal/Legal Assistant to Vermilion City Prosecutor

REPORTS TO: Vermilion City Prosecutor and City of Vermilion Law Director


  • Receives, examines, and evaluates all new criminal and traffic cases with reference to the facts of the case and established standards. Ensures accuracy of issued uniform traffic tickets, and criminal complaints pursuant to Ohio Revised Code and the Criminal and Traffic Rules of Procedure.
  • Assists in determining probable cause by reviewing investigative reports, establishing the need for further evidence and information, and planning a comprehensive approach to obtaining that information and evidence. Advises prosecuting attorneys of the strengths and weaknesses of probable cause and potential defenses.
  • Investigates facts and laws of cases and searches public records and other resources to prepare cases and determine causes of action by using a variety of legal research tools, public and law enforcement information databases, and other automated resources. Communicates with law enforcement officers regarding availability of evidence and witnesses.
  • Assists law enforcement officers in preparation of search warrants, subpoenas, complaints and gives direction on legal issues under the supervision of prosecuting attorneys.
  • Assists prosecuting attorneys in pre-trial preparations by preparing, reviewing, and organizing discovery; notifying, interviewing law enforcement officers in preparation for motions to suppress , trial and jury trial, preparing summaries providing, educational materials, and managing lay and expert witnesses.
  • Prepares legal pleadings, motions, responses to motions, plea agreements, jury instructions, appeal briefs and other papers and proposed orders. Issues subpoenas as required for hearing, motion hearing, and trial. Prepares pleadings for appeals court and submits electronic filings.
  • Organizes, obtains, and manages files, documents, videos, photographs, witness statements and exhibits. Prepares summaries as required.
  • Acts as assignment commissioner at the pre-trial level, setting cases for hearing pursuant to established court and Supreme Court standards. Sets up video hearings, sends notice to parties and acts as administrator of video hearings.
  • Serves as victim advocate offering crisis intervention, emotional support, resources and referrals, information on victimization, assist with Crime Victims Compensation Application, provide information on legal rights and protections, the criminal justice process, assist victims and their family members submit statements to the court, and provide notification of court hearings.
  • Answers phone, directs calls, greets, and acts as receptionist to visitors, defense counsel, victims, and law enforcement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Education and Credentials

  • Paralegal degree or 10 years’ equivalent legal experience as a legal assistant in private law office or governmental entity.
  • Detailed knowledge of the Ohio Revised Code regarding criminal complaints and the Criminal and Traffic Rules of Procedure.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with attorneys, police officers, and state highway patrolmen.
  • Available to work part-time at least 24 hours per week on the days the Vermilion Municipal Court is in session.
